Landaulet Peugeot 604

A most unusual Peugeot 604 landaulet was offered for sale in Niger. Please note Niger, a former French colony, is not Nigeria. Look here if you want to learn more about Niger. This Peugeot 604 landaulet was the presidential car.

The car is said to have only 15,000kms on the clock. The references noted on the chassis number are:

Judging by the chassis number, it should be a 1978 model.

The modification into a landaulet was most certainly made by Chapron. A picture of a brand new car seemingly identical (Peugeot 604 SL, same leather colour, same roof handle, same trim at the bottom of the hood) can be found on page 57 of Dominique Pagneux's book "La Peugeot 604 de mon père":

The legend in Dominique Pagneux's book says that this Peugeot 604 landaulet was made for Mr Heineken (the brewer). However, this seems to be a mistaken statement; and I am being told by another very authoritative source that the book's car is the Niger car, which was on display at the 1978 Paris Motor Show before being shipped to Niger. Heineken's car is still in his museum in Holland, and is in fact quite different: grey leather and hood, a partition, a wooden drinks cabinet and dashboard are some of its distinctive features.

Only two landaulets have ever been made by Chapron. Notice that the wheelbase is longer than on a standard Peugeot 604, but not quite as long as on the Heuliez limousines.

The car has been a little neglected, as you can see on the pictures, but all seems to be there and it is a good restoration base. This historic Peugeot 604 has been purchased by a gentleman in France. We'll keep you informed!
